Technical Parameters

The Extended-Stem Triple-Offset Butterfly Valve is built for extreme-temperature and insulated piping systems where standard valve operators cannot be directly mounted. By integrating a rigid extended neck, the body remains enclosed within pipe insulation or cryogenic cold boxes while positioning the packing gland and top flange in an accessible ambient zone. This architecture prevents packing freeze-up, condensation ice accumulation, and rapid thermal dissipation.

Key Features

Extended Shaft Structure: Moves packing gland clear of thermal insulation or sub-zero liquid zones to preserve seal integrity.

Triple-Eccentric Zero-Leakage Sealing: Frictionless engagement eliminates seat wear during rotation, delivering bi-directional bubble-tight shut-off.

Fugitive Emissions Control: Top-mounted gland packing design complies with ISO 15848-1 Class AH and API 641 standards.

Hardfaced Metal Seats: Stellite seat overlays withstand thermal shock, severe erosion, and high differential pressure.

Fire-Safe Construction: Full metallic body integrity tested and certified to API 607 and ISO 10497 standards.

Design & Construction

Stem Extension Assembly: Solid or tubular extension shafts engineered via finite element analysis to eliminate torsional deflection under maximum operating torque.

Condensation Guard Plate: Integral drip plate diverts frost run-off away from packing nuts and top actuator flanges.

Replaceable Seal Ring: Laminated stainless steel and flexible graphite disc seal ring allows quick field replacement without specialized tooling.

Guide Bushings: Multi-point internal shaft guides absorb lateral pipeline vibration and prevent stem jamming over long extension spans.

Working Principle

The extension shaft transfers actuator torque down to the offset disc in the process stream. Triple-offset geometry ensures the disc contacts the body seat only at the final point of closure. The cam-action sealing ring seats uniformly without sliding friction. Upon opening, the disc disengages immediately from the seat face, eliminating wear across high-cycle operations.

Applications

Cryogenic Liquefied Gas Terminals: Prevents packing freeze-up in LNG, liquid ethylene, and liquid nitrogen lines.

District Heating Systems: Extends operators past high-density insulation blankets on steam headers.

Petrochemical Refining: Accommodates thick thermal or acoustic cladding on hot hydrocarbon lines.

Underground Distribution Lines: Enables above-ground manual or automated actuation for buried pipelines.

Product Selection Guide

Identify Operating Temperatures: Select carbon steel for general duties, LCC/CF8M for cryogenic service below -46°C, or alloy steel for temperatures above 400°C.

Calculate Extension Length (L): Measure total insulation thickness (T) plus clearance (C) to the actuator mounting plate: L = T + C.

Verify Operating Torque: Factor in extended shaft length and dynamic line pressure when sizing pneumatic or electric actuators.

Define Sealing Grade: Determine whether bi-directional zero-leakage or specific fugitive emission control is required.

Select Flange Type: Specify double-flanged or butt-weld ends for buried or high-risk line installations.

Inspection & Testing

Non-Destructive Testing: Radiographic Testing (RT) on castings, Magnetic Particle (MT) or Liquid Penetrant (PT) inspection on weld overlays.

Pressure & Leakage Verification: Shell hydrostatic testing at 1.5 times design pressure plus high-pressure seat air testing per API 598.

Cryogenic Testing: Submerged liquid nitrogen seat testing down to -196°C per BS 6364 / MSS SP-134 requirements.

Torque & Alignment Inspection: Full-stroke torque measurement and shaft runout verification on completely assembled valve extensions.

Customization & Engineering Options

Tailored Extension Heights: Custom machining of extension columns up to 2000 mm based on pipeline insulation drawings.

Live-Loaded Packing: Belleville spring sets applied to packing studs to compensate for severe thermal cycling.

Body Purge Connections: Optional lantern rings and purge ports for inert gas buffering in toxic media service.

Hardfacing Overlays: Inconel 625 or Monel cladding applied to critical seat surfaces and stem bearing areas.

FAQ

Q: How is the required stem extension length calculated for insulated pipelines?

A: The extension length should match the total insulation thickness plus a clearance of 100 mm between the cladding exterior and the gland flange. This maintains space for packing gland adjustments without disturbing insulation layers.

Q: What prevents shaft deflection or binding in long extension assemblies?

A: Extensions incorporate internal guide bearings along the shaft sleeve. Sleeve diameters and wall thicknesses are verified via finite element analysis to resist torsional loads without twisting or binding.

Q: How does the extension prevent packing freeze-up in cryogenic service?

A: The extended housing creates a controlled thermal gradient. Heat transferred from the ambient environment keeps the gland packing temperature above freezing thresholds, preventing ice formation on packing seals.

Q: Can extended-stem valves be installed in horizontal pipelines?

A: Vertical stem orientation is recommended. For horizontal installations, external support brackets must be attached to the extended housing to prevent bending moments on the main valve body packing box.

Q: Are replacement parts for extension assemblies standardized?

A: Yes. Extensions feature ISO 5211 top flange dimensions. Drive keys, couplings, and mounting hardware follow standard dimensional tolerances for quick field maintenance.
